Acolytes

The Acolytes serves the Parish community through assisting the priest at mass and other liturgies.

Centering Prayer Group

This group uses the contemplative prayer process (scripture reading followed by 20 minutes of silent, intense prayer) to gain greater insight into God’s love.

Charismatic Prayer Group

This group, which is affiliated with the Diocesan Charismatic Prayer Group, offers intercessory prayer for our Parish and the Diocese.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

This group exists to provide an opportunity for children (K-1) to hear readings and respond to them in a simpler language during the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Children leave Mass at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Word and return at the Presentation of Gifts. Adults who wish to share their faith with children are welcome to join the team.

Choir - Accompanist

These individuals enhance worship by providing piano or organ accompaniment for sung hymns and psalms, plus instrumental music for periods of prayer and reflection.

TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 2 or 3 Masses per month, plus personal practice time at home and with cantors, as needed.

Choir - Adult

This group enhances community worship with song at the 10:30 Sunday High Mass and one 5:30 Vigil Mass per month; Christmas Midnight Mass; Holy Week Liturgy, and other special liturgies throughout the year.

TIME COMMITMENT: Weekly practice on Wednesday evenings- 2 hours per week and 2 hours on Sunday (one hour practice and Mass) (Ages 19 and up.)

Choir - Cantors

These individuals lead the congregation in song and Psalms during Mass and other liturgies.

Choir - Handbell

This group enhances celebration liturgies at Christmas, Easter and Confirmation.

TIME COMMITMENT: Practice 1 1/2 hours per week on Sunday evenings for 8 weeks prior to special liturgies.

Choir - Youth

This group promotes youth involvement in worship at the monthly Sunday 6:00 p.m. Mass and the 10:30 Sunday High Mass/ 5:30 Vigil Mass every other weekend, and at prayer services and special liturgies during Sunday evening Youth Program.

Extra-Ordinary Ministers Of Holy Communion

This group facilitates the distribution of the Body and Blood of Jesus on Sunday and Holy Day Liturgies.

Extra-Ordinary Ministers to the Sick

Eucharistic Ministers take Holy Communion on a scheduled basis to the sick and homebound in our parish. Visits are also made to comfort the lonely who may not be able to receive the Eucharist for various reasons.  . A secondary but important ministry is to provide spiritual comfort to families of sick and homebound through the visitation.

TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 3 hours per month - some will spend much more time visiting.

Fishers of Men

Group of men that gather once a week, for approximately an hour, to share their faith journeys' with each other.  Includes scripture readings, prayer, and apostolic service activities.

Greeters

Greeters have two primary missions: to welcome members and visitors to Sunday Mass and to answer questions visitors and newcomers may have.

Lectors

Lectors proclaim the word of the Lord during the Liturgy of the Word at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days.

Legion of Mary

The purpose of the Legion of Mary is to grow in a deeper love for God and his Son Jesus, through devotion to Mary. Active members serve the parish family by welcoming new parishioners and new babies, making census calls, visiting the sick and homebound, attending funeral rites for deceased parishioners and doing other things at the request of the pastor. (Auxiliary members support the parish with prayer.)

TIME COMMITMENT: Weekly meetings on Monday, 9:30-11:00 in the Church Conference Room. Approximately 1 ½ hours per week.

Liturgy Committee

The Liturgy Committee assists the Pastor in planning all liturgical services at St. Mary’s.

Living in the Divine Will Spirituality - Study and Prayer

Reading and reflection on the Book of Heaven which Jesus gave to Luisa Piccarreta (1865-1947) over 40 years  (1899-1939) about "a new and divine holiness."

Sacristan

Sacristans prepare the sacred vessels used at Mass. They provide a service for the celebrant and are responsible for maintaining the sacred vessels.

Stewardship Committee

This Committee exists to inspire and promote participation of all parishioners in the areas of prayer, ministry, and finance.  New ministries are developed as the committee determines the needs of the parishioners at large.

Ushers

Adult Retreats - Men

Men’s retreats are held to provide men an opportunity to deepen their personal relationship with God, to rest, and time to bond and form relationships with fellow parishioners. There are retreat opportunities offered for the men during the year.

Cursillo

Cursillo is a Movement of the Catholic Church. The name Cursillo de Cristiandad is Spanish, meaning a short course. It is often a 3 day weekend of spiritual growth and renewal.

Eucharistic Adoration

Offering the parish community the opportunity to grow in a deeper more intimate communion with Jesus Christ, St. Mary’s offers the gift of Eucharistic Adoration every First Friday and Saturday of the month.   Parishioners are asked to spend one hour with our Lord in prayer and adoration to Him.

Marriage Encounter

Worldwide Marriage Encounter is a unique approach aimed at revitalizing Christian Marriage. Marriage Encounter in West Tennessee is a joint effort of the Dioceses of Nashville and Memphis. Pope John Paul II said, “I place much of my hope for the future in Marriage Encounter.” The weekend is uniquely Catholic in orientation. A typical Marriage Encounter Weekend will find Catholic couples, couples of other faith expressions, and non-Catholic spouses or mixed faith marriages in participation.

Parish Library

This ministry exists to provide literary resources to parishioners interested in furthering their understanding of the Catholic faith.

Parish Religious Education (PRE)

Volunteers in this ministry serve as catechists in the Parish Religious Education program.  The program provides religious instruction for children in grades K - 6.  The Parish Religious Education program runs from October to mid-May.  Classes are held on Sunday mornings from 9:10 to 10:15 in the school.   Catechists are needed for English and Spanish classes.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Sponsor

Through the process known as the RCIA, anyone who wishes to learn more about the Catholic Church or wishes to join the Church is invited to participate. The program begins in the summer with Inquiry Classes. Mentored by parishioner/sponsors, candidates attend weekly classes on the faith, teachings and practices of Catholics. The group meets on Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m. September to May.

Parish Rosary

Praying the rosary daily is encouraged.  The Women's Rosary group prays the rosary during the months of October and May.  The Knights of Columbus pray the Cenacle Rosary every Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Scripture Study Group

Knowing the importance of God’s revealed word. Divine Revelation aids in our understanding of what God handed down to humanity through the word made flesh - Jesus Christ. Growing in this understanding of the Deposit of Faith, St. Mary’s scripture study sessions are meant to aid the parishioner’s growth in appreciation and veneration of God’s revealed word.

St. Mary Reads

A program, in which a book of interest to Catholic spirituality is read, facilitated and discussed.  This group chooses the schedule of books for the year.

Catholic Youth Organization (CYO)

Volunteers in this ministry serve as advisors to youth in grades 7 – 12 through the Total Youth Program.  The group meets on Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m., mid-September to May.  This program also includes various retreats and trips.

Women’s Spiritual Study

The study group invites women interested in growing in their spirituality through prayer, reading, reflection and discussion to join them in their faith journey. Stewardship and Service

Parish Pastoral Council

The Pastoral Council is made up of parish members who assist the pastor in carrying out the responsibilities of parish life. They provide overall leadership by directing activities and programs that promote a strong spiritual and family foundation. Membership on the council is by election or appointment and the term is for three years. Meetings are held monthly.

Altar Society

The Altar Society exists to give that “special, reverential” care to the altar area, the sanctuary, the Stations of the Cross, and the care of Mary and Joseph statues. The Society enjoys keeping this holy environment clean and in good condition.

This group assists in making our Church a warm, clean and inviting environment.

Collection Counters

The group counts the Sunday offertory collection and prepares the collection for deposit to the bank.

Finance Council

The Finance Council, established by the church’s Code of Canon Law #537, serves the parish in matters of finance and administration. Council members review the annual budget, review financial reports, offer financial and managerial advice, and provide the Pastor counsel on purchasing, fundraising, and any other significant administrative issues.

Fourth Degree of The Knights of Columbus

On February 22, 1900, the first exemplification of that degree was held in New York City. The ritual added patriotism to the three original principals of the Order: charity, unity and fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing, one year after the anniversary of his First Degree, is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree. The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of Patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of/and loyalty to the Knights’ respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups called assemblies. Fourth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.

Helping Hands Volunteers

Knights of Columbus

This group exists to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement. The primary area of service is to the community and secondly to the youth. We are a Catholic fraternal organization open to all Catholic men above 18 in communion with the Holy See.

TIME COMMITMENT: 2 hours/month - meetings plus activities such as Christmas Basket collection, pancake breakfasts, dinners, also responsible for helping with Mt. Calvary Cemetery - opening/closing gates on Sundays.

This group exists to support and assist with the operations of the cemetery by providing occasional labor for maintenance projects/clean-up as scheduled by the cemetery coordinator.   Members of this committee

Nursery Volunteers

Childcare is available during the weekend Masses: Saturday, 5:30 p.m.  Mass (infants thru pre-school), Sunday, 10:30 a.m. Mass (infants and under 2) in the Church Nursery. All parishioners are welcome to use this service. Parents are expected on occasion to participate in the nursery program during the Masses, thus assisting the nursery coordinators with caring for the children.

Prayer Line

The prayer line provides a rapid response of prayer in emergency situations, by coordinating and contacting all who are willing to pray for those in immediate need of prayer.

Prison Ministry

There are several venues for participaton in prison ministry.  A weekly group visits prisoners, both male and female at the Jackson Madison County Criminal Justice Complex.  Also a monthly Communion service is held behind the walls of the prison at Fort Pillow State Penitentiary near Ripley, TN.  A one-on-one ministry is being conducted at various prisons around the state.

TIME COMMITMENT:  3-4 hours per month depending on the ministry chosen.  Both Deacon Jim Moss and Dale Childress participate in this ministry

Special Receptions/Services Volunteer

Squires

The Columbian Squires is an international youth fraternity run by the Knights of Columbus for Catholic boys between the ages of 10 and 18.  The Squires meet monthly the first Sunday of each month and work with the Knights on service projects as needed.  Squires also enjoy opportunities for fellowship and outdoor activities throughout the year.

St. Elizabeth’s Bookstore Volunteers

St. Elizabeth’s Bookstore began in June 1993 as a ministry of St. Mary’s Church serving Catholics of the Jackson Deanery. Located in the Church Narthex, it is operated totally by volunteers between the weekend Masses and is directed by a Board of Directors which includes the Pastor and ten other members of the Church.

Social Outreach

English as a Second Language - ESL Program

This group exists to teach English to the ever-increasing number of immigrants in the community in order to assist them in assimilating into our culture. Our main goal is to teach English, and secondarily to make newcomers feel truly welcome here.

Haiti Outreach/Medical Mission

Our Mission is to help our sister Parish in Moron, Haiti with services, health, and education. We staff a permanent clinic in Moron and organize medical mission trips to the area.

TIME COMMITMENT: 6 meetings per year. Medical professionals and skilled craftsman travel to Haiti - 10 day trips in fall and spring each year.

Heartwarmers

Heartwarmers makes tied quilts of various sizes to donate to those who are in need. Their primary areas of service are providing quilts to the Red Cross for local disaster relief, the local hospital’s nursery, WRAP, and the Knights of Columbus Christmas baskets. In addition, this group affords an opportunity for fellowship for its participants. Sewers and non-sewers of all ages are welcome.

Respect Life Committee

Parishioners of St. Mary’s give a voice to those whose life is at risk in our society through lack of respect. We are law-abiding citizens who, because of our faith, believe that all human life is God’s creation and should be respected and protected. The committee educates parishioners on Church teachings concerning abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, fertility, sex education in the schools, and other areas where life is at risk. The committee represents the Catholic Church’s position on these life issues to the wider community.  This committee also serves as a source of information on services and counseling available in our community for those in need of counseling for unplanned pregnancies and for post-abortion counseling services.

Soup Kitchen Volunteers

The larger Jackson community prepares a hot meal daily for the hungry of the area. St. Mary’s provides volunteers and desserts several weeks during the year through the RIFA program.

Community Building

Bereavement Committee

This group exists to bring love from St. Mary’s to the family of those who pass away. It helps bring the grieving period to another level of closure. We provide a meal immediately following the funeral service for whomever the family wants by their side. The committee needs food and monetary donations in addition to TIME COMMITMENT.

Black Catholic Committee

This group exists to carry out the plan of action published by the National Black Catholic Congress in its Declaration of Principles and Pastoral Plan of Action for Black Catholics. This document is a proactive mandate by the National Black Catholic Congress to engage in those activities that will ensure that black Catholics enter fully into the life of the American Catholic Church spiritually, socially and educationally and encourages all black Catholics to take greater responsibility in ministry, parish life, social justice issues and Catholic education. The areas of concern for this group are spirituality, parish life, youth and young adults, Catholic education, social justice, racism, Africa and HIV/AIDS. The group meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Lourdes Room.

Campus Ministry

This ministry exists to provide opportunities for college students for fellowship, faith sharing and community service.  Through this ministry, parish families may adopt students living away from home providing moral support, rides to Mass and a “home away from home” at St. Mary’s Church. In addition, the Campus Ministry and St. Mary's holds on-campus Masses to give students the chance to worship together in their shcool

Catholic Scouting - Boys - Cubs

Scouting at St. Mary’s is part of the National Scouting Movement. The primary area of service is to boys of the parish and school, ages 6-11. They enjoy many events like camping, hiking, pinewood derby races, day trips, sporting events, arts and crafts, etc. They meet on Monday nights at the school cafeteria. Boy Scouts for ages 12-18 are not currently available at St. Mary’s. Most of our boys are part of the troop at Cumberland Presbyterian.

Catholic Scouting - Girls

The Girl Scout program is consistent with Girl Scouting U.S.A. guidelines for girls. The mission of Girl Scouting is to inspire girls ages 5-17 with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism, and service that they may become happy and resourceful citizens.

Connect Team

The core objective of this group is to "CONNECT" new parishioners with our Church family in a way that is both spiritually fulfilling to the new members and also grows active parish membership.  CONNECT team members act as guides for new parishioners and expose them to the many ways they can be actively engaged with St. Mary's.

This group exists to represent St. Mary’s Parish at all deanery and diocesan meetings, projects, etc. St. Mary’s is affiliated with the National Council of Catholic Women. Their mission statement supports, empowers and educates all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service. National Council of Catholic Women programs respond with Gospel values to the needs of the church and society in the modern world. All women in the parish are welcome and invited to participate.

TIME COMMITMENT: No meetings at parish level, currently. There are quarterly meetings at the Diocesan level - a few hours per quarter.

Merry Makers

The Merrymakers are a group of our senior citizens that meets on the fourth Friday of the month at 11:30 a.m. This group brings parishioners together in faith building, friendship and fun. This group exists solely for the purpose of fun and fellowship.

TIME COMMITMENT: 2 hours/month - social meeting only.

Multicultural Leaders Committee

The committee is inspired to strengthen God’s kingdom by sharing our cultural fruits within the parish and throughout the community. It is accomplished through fellowship, faith, action and an annual Multi-Cultural event.

TIME COMMITMENT: Meets approximately once per quarter - or more often as necessary for special events.

Parish athletics provide recreation, fellowship and team building.

Parish Family Dinners

Parish Family Dinners offer an opportunity for food and fellowship for our parish community. Parish Family Dinners are held Wednesday nights at 5:30 p.m. during the fall. Friday night fish fry dinners are held during Lent. Proceeds from the dinners help to fund the Haiti Medical Mission.

TIME COMMITMENT: Groups volunteer for one dinner annually plus fish fry team.
